10 miles became 6 miles…
Today I slept in late and woke up feeling GREAT. When I found out it was 65 degrees outside, I decided to run a newly discovered trail. It was a disaster from the get go, but I was too excited to notice. A planned 10 miler was shamefully reduced to 6. Shameful not because of the distance, but because of my lack of respect and attention to conditions. No breakfast, just a couple of bottles of water, a banana, and a power bar. Great start, right? It didn’t get much better…. But I DID come up with this for others who might face the same situation:
Today’s running lessons learned:
- Do NOT underestimate the power of water, especially the lack thereof.
- Do NOT underestimate the power of the sun to heat you up. QUICKLY.
- Do NOT underestimate the power of sweat in your eyes to slow you down.
- Do NOT overestimate your distance because you feel great before starting.
- Do NOT deviate from your plan when you know that it works.
- Do NOT quit, but do NOT push to the point of injury.
- DO enjoy the success and knowledge gained, even when things don’t go exactly as planned.
